2009 Triple-S Invitational Final Results

After the autograph session, Triple-S event mc Trip Forman officially introduced the riders to the growing crowd which filled the entire west and north decks of REAL as well as half the lawn. The roar from the crowd for each rider could be heard a mile away as the anticipation grew to find out who had taken home the Triple-S gold. Aaron Sales, editor of Kiteboarding Magazine, the first and largest kiteboarding magazine in the world, took the microphone and addressed the crowd as to the importance of the Triple-S on an international basis and where the event is taking the direction of the sport. Aaron has traveled the world and been to every major kiteboarding event. His opinion was that the Triple-S is at the forefront of the sport, definitely the best event in the world……

Then it was time to announce the winners of the Triple-S….Surf, Slicks and Sliders, as well as Best Session, Best Wipeout and the Triple-S Slick Style Attitude Award. The Triple-S is judged by the riders themselves, as well as the media staff, providing 36 ballots to assure an accurate and fair result. Of the 4 previous years, this was by far the most difficult year to judge as the riding level was incredibly high and competitive. In years past the judging ballot would take less than 5 minutes to complete, this year it took over 20 minutes for some riders. In the end there were no losers, as everyone got to ride for the entire week, raise their game and have the week of a lifetime in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Dub Island Sound System rocked the house throughout the Triple-S Awards Ceremony and Party from 7pm straight through until 4am, making for an unbelievable end to an unbelievable week. Dub puts on a show that you have to see to believe, some people dancing for 8 hours straight !

Get ready for Triple-S 2010, scheduled for June 5th – June 11th, 2010 in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. It is going to be another epic week of Surf, Slicks and Sliders.

Thanks again to all the sponsors who made this week possible, and to the Triple-S riders and spectators who make this event bigger and better every year!

Friday, June 5th saw the final day of the 2009 Triple-S Invitational in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina. Strong SW winds buffeted the Outer Banks and a full day of kiting and partying was on tap for everyone involved.

The final Triple-S riders meeting was held under the Red Bull tent and the schedule was set for Slicks (flat water freestyle) from 11:30am to 1:30pm and then Surf from 2pm until 5pm. Riders immediately rigged and then headed up to The Slick for flatwater action. Kevin Langeree, Brandon Scheid, Greg Norman, Susi Mai, Clarissa Hempel. Bruna Kajiya and Shannon Best lit up North Point in The Slick with an unbelievable freestyle session including powered handle passes, kite loops and massive airs (Shannon jumped all of North Point taking off at Waller’s Pier !). Winds were so strong that the girls were eventually blown off of 6 and 7m kites and the guys were lit to the gills on 7m and 8m’s ! A large crowd assembled to watch the action, many of them ducking in the reeds as Shannon flew over the entire event !

At 2pm, the entire event packed up and headed to Ramp 27 (4 miles south of Salvo) for some surf action. Local kiter Brad Doehr of Avon had spotted a new sandbar here earlier in the week and with strong SW winds and a chest high SE groundswell it was on like donkey kong ! Riders hit the water using 5m-7m kites, all on surfboards. Santa Barbara wildcard winner Ian Alldredge stunned the crowd with his powerful wave riding style, mixed with all the lip slides, transition tricks, and strapless airs you have never seen before. Triple-S guest rider Reo Stevens from Oahu showed his powerful frontside attack, as did Sam Bell of Cape Hatteras. Jon Modica of Florida (winner of 2008 Triple-S Surf) showed why he is always at the top with a great mix of aggressive wave rides, tricks and airs that would bring him into the upper mix for the day. With the winds being so strong, it was definitely a handle for the ladies. Clarissa Hempel of Brazil, locked and loaded with a 5m kite, tore apart the surf with her strapped surfboard, showing great down the line style and timing.

The fact that the wind and waves showed up in epic form at the close of the 2009 Triple-S, allowing all three disciplines to be completed, only added more fuel to the fire for the upcoming Awards Dinner, Ceremony and Party that would follow later that evening. The Awards Dinner started at 5pm with chicken and ribs prepared on an outdoor BBQ by MOJOs Sunset Café. This event was open to the public, and was attended with enthusiasm from the entire Cape Hatteras community, serving well over 300 dinners, all waterfront on the back lawn. The Awards Ceremony kicked off at 8pm with an autograph session with the Triple-S athletes. Here, fans were able to take home an official Triple-S event poster with 24 of the world’s best kiteboarders’ signatures.

The 2009 Triple-S Invitational continued to fire all day on Wednesday, June 3rd with perfect SW winds in the 25mph range and blue sunny skies. Riders headed back up to The Slick for a day of REAL Slider Park action!

Wednesday saw riders hitting every feature of the REAL Slider Park including the new John Wayne Cancer Foundation rail, the REAL Flatbar, REAL Funbox and REAL Kicker. Powerful SW winds saw riders again on kites in the 7m-9m range with air/water temps both in the 80’s.

Billy Parker, Jon Modica, Reo Stevens, Ian Alldredge and Kevin Langeree headed upwind to Wind Over Waves to flat water session the two small islands off the coast, as well the Wind Over Waves Pier. These riders showed the true potential of both strapless and strapped riding in flatwater, on twin tips, wakeskates and strapless surfboards, all destroying the session with moves that were blowing the camera mans’ minds! The final session of this flatwater trip saw Reo and Kevin “acid dropping” the Pier, free falling 10ft back down to the water, landing on their surfboards and riding away clean! Kevin even pulled out his twin tip and nailed a perfect skate-style hand plant on the pier railing!

Back down to The Slick with even more kicker and slider action. 16 year old Jake Kelsick from Antigua was blowing up the REAL Kicker, while Sam Bell wrote some new stories on how the REAL Flatbar needs to be ridden ! On one slide, we even witnessed Sammy pull out a beer, pop the top, and toast the cameraman on the way off! The JWCF rail was set up for the goofy foot riders, just downwind of North Point. This rail continued to be one of the favorites of the day with riders learning all their regular foot tricks of the previous day in the new goofy foot direction. With the REAL Funbox just downwind, Triple-S riders could hit the JWCF, then turn and hit the Funbox on the way downwind. It was the same for the REAL Flatbar upwind. Flatbar first, then JWCF, then Funbox . Tons of hits!!!

Wednesday night saw Mojo Collins and his 6-piece blues band rocking out from 7-11pm on the back deck of REAL at MOJOs Sunset Café. All the Triple-S riders were joined by Cape Hatteras locals, Triple-S spectators and Mojo Collins fans who drove from as far away as New Jersey to watch the waterfront concert. (They didn’t even know the Triple-S was happening, or even what kiteboarding was !) 7 Parties and 5 Bands kicked it hard on Wednesday night, climaxing with the final song where all the musicians solo-ed and Mojo brought down the house with his powerful guitar playing style.

Thursday’s forecast was for SW winds building into the afternoon, but an approaching front swatted the winds and saw Triple-S riders towing behind PWCs, sessioning the REAL Flatbar and Dock Slider until dusk. Friday’s forecast is for STRONG S going SW winds and good surf, so expect the Triple-S to move to the waves, to complete the final discipline of the 2009 “Surf, Slicks and Sliders” Invitational.

Special THANKS to all the sponsors that make this event possible ! Tuesday, June 2nd saw a FULL day of action at the 2009 Triple-S Invitational in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina.

Triple-S Invited Riders met underneath the Red Bull Tent for the daily 11am riders meeting and then hit the water for a full day of riding action starting at 1:30pm. Building SW winds saw the riders opting for kite sizes in the 10-12m range for session #1 and then 7-9m range for session #2.

Tuesday’s riding took place entirely in The Slick with the entire REAL Slider Park set up including the REAL Funbox and Flatbar, REAL Kicker and the new John Wayne Cancer Foundation Slider. A new flag system was put in place to thin the crowd down to only 12 riders at a time for 30 minute sessions. This system allowed maximum focus and progression for each group, and also provided the resting riders a recharge period (more Red Bull!) and the ability to watch their friends blow it up !

The new JWCF Slider continued to be the main draw of the day, with the riding level through the roof. Going the full distance on the rail was no longer good enough. Riders pushed the bar higher and higher with handlepasses on every part of the rail, passing going up, passing across and passing down,…. gapping the center section, gaping with a flat 3, tail pressing, nose pressing, 270 on’s to 3’s up the up rail to nose presses on the downrail, you name it!

Standout riders for the day included wildcard winner Petter Johnsen (mad technical style), Ruben Lenten (balls to the wall progression), Dylan Thomson (smooooooooth snow/skate style), Dre (fast, fast, fast, did we mention fast?) Brandon Scheid (pulling every type of press and grab there is), Aaron Hadlow (he could be the world champion in any boardsport), Slezy and Sammy (both showing all their friends why Cape Hatteras is the bomb), wait a minute…. I think we will need to say something good about everyone, which could take 10 pages!!!!! Whether it was the JWCF, kicker or flatbar, the 24 , and guest rider for the day Lulu Vroman, were all riding off the richter scale and pushing each other to new limits!!!

The REAL Kicker and Flatbar also saw a lot of action as these features were downwind of the JWCF and allowed riders to continue their downwind run and hit two more sliders before heading back upwind. The Kicker was positioned right off “North Point” with riders blazing in and booting huge. At one point, Billy Parker and Greg Norman Jr were going so high people were cringing in anticipation of their landings. You have to remember, NOBODY is sending their kites above them off of these things. It is all forward momentum and speed, so you have to stick it and there is no “spotter” (ie. the kite) to save you from a mistimed landing.

Tuesday’s riding kept going well past sunset,…. well past dark actually! Clear skies, cranking SW winds and a bright moon saw riders hitting every rail until they were literally towed out from under them. Riders then made their way back to MOJO’s Sunset Café for Taco Tuesday with fresh fish, beef and pork tacos and some COLD Kona Brewing Co beers. Music on the back deck, sessioned out riders and fans, and all the tacos and beer you could devour was the ultimate wind down to a mega day on the way!

Wednesday and Thursday look like more SW winds, with Mojo Collins playing live on Wednesday night as part of the Kona Sunset Session Party Series. The Triple-S Awards Dinner kicks off at 5pm on Friday on the back lawn, hosted by Mojo’sSusnet Café and is open to the public. The Triple-S Awards Ceremony starts at 7pm Friday, featuring the blazalicious tunes of Dub Island Sound System.

Needless to say, there is a lot of action left during the 2009 Triple-S!!!

Special THANKS to Greg and Sherry Waller for allowing spectators to access The Slick via their pier and deck right on the water. This vantage point is private property and normally off limits. During the Triple-S they have opened this access to the spectators for the best viewing while the riding is happening at The Slick. Please be respectful and pack out anything you pack in.

2009 Triple-S kicks off in Cape Hatteras, NC….

The 2009 Triple-S Invitational kicked off on Saturday, May 30th with the official Triple-S Welcome Dinner and Opening Ceremonies Party. The Triple-S Invited riders and the public were treated to a classic Carolina BBQ Pig Roast with all the trimmings outside right on the water at The Slick.

The Welcome Dinner started at 5pm and put the sun down as “DJ Chela” kicked up the music and the Triple-S Opening Ceremonies Party. As the crowd started to wind up, spectators were stoked with a 6 table Triple-S athlete autograph session on the official event poster. Imagine being able to have one poster with signatures from Aaron Hadlow, Ruben Lenten, Robby Naish, Andre Phillip, Greg Norman Jr, Jason Slezak, Sam Bell, Brandon Scheid, Kevin Langeree, Susi Mai, Clarissa Hempel and all the Triple-S athletes, all on one poster! The vibe during the autograph session was off the hook as the excitement (and music) kept building and building! AT 9:10PM it was time to party and the tables were cleared and the dancing began….

The Triple-S Opening Ceremonies Party continued thru until 11pm with rider introductions and a speech from Robby Naish officially kicking off the event. Unbelievable music and dancing continued until 11pm at REAL and MOJOs, and then carried on to the after hours party where DJ Chela threw down until 4am! Needless to say, everyone was loving the 11am riders meeting on Sunday morning!

Launch of the John Wayne Slider

Every year the Triple-S grows, both in athlete participation and excitement, as well as in the event itself, the parties and the REAL Slider Park. This year, John Wayne Cancer Foundation stepped up to the plate and launched a new slider into the park that redefined the standard for kiteboarding sliders worldwide. This new rail was built by The Wake Park Project in Florida, constructed with welded aluminum, covered in HDPE (high density polyethylene). Basically, it is going to last longer than any of us reading this article AND it is perfectly designed, a true work of genius! The new John Wayne rail is 82’ feet long and features a removable gap section in the middle, so it can be set up as an “A-Frame” or a “Gap Slider”. To see it in the water brings only jaw dropping awe…. The only thing even close to the experience of seeing the JWCF in the water is looking at a 100’ maxi ocean racing sailboat pulling out of Newport to set a new Transatlantic record. It’s that tight, that powerful and that perfect. The new John Wayne rail means business and from the second it was delivered to REAL (on three flat bed trucks driving thru the night from Florida) the Triple-S athletes were drooling!

The SW winds filled in all day Sunday and riders hit the water for a “Slicks” session to kick off the event. The first run was an 8 mile downwinder thru “The Planet of the Apes” with high speed tricks, low level/powered wake maneuvers, massive downwind speed, land gaps, dock slides, canal runs and mega kite loops from all the riders. Seeing these guys and girls sending down this infamous run is a true privilege. Triple-S event co-director Jason Slezak guided his friends down the run showing them every nook and cranny of flat water, canals, and dock sliders that make this run the ultimate in the world.

Riders landed at REAL, then enjoyed some deck time at MOJOs Sunset Café enjoying lunch, Icelandic Water and a few Red Bulls to get pumped for the PM session. The entire REAL Slider Park was set up right off REAL, allowing unbelievable spectator viewing with bleachers, music and cold Kona Brewing Company beer flowing off 10 taps. The REAL Funbox and Flat Rail were the first to be set up and riders sessioned them senseless as the new megaladon JWCF rail made its way to the water.

Right out of the blocks, riders were going for distance and style on the new John Wayne rail and screaming at the top of their lungs with excitement. This new rail is so rock steady in the water, offering a wide, perfectly smooth sliding surface. The center section was installed for the first sessions, showing a clear plexiglass center section Susi Mai dreamed of filling with jelly beans! Aaron, Ruben, Brandon, Sam Bell and Greg Norman were the first to ride end to end, and then push the envelope with insane nose presses, handle passes, gaps and more. The rest of the riders followed and upped the anti each run. The riders sessioned the JWCF until the sun went down, uncorking a full day of Triple-S action right in front of REAL. We could write for hours about this session, but the video at the bottom of the page does a better job of showcasing the action.

Kona Sunset Session Parties

Kona Brewing Company of Hawaii partnered with the Triple-S to throw 5 KONA Sunset Session Parties Sunday thru Thursday. Sunday evening kicked off the first of this series with a great sunset, music, unbelievable Triple-S action and cold Kona Brewing Co beer right at the water’s edge! You couldn’t imagine a better place to sit back and watch the action. Monday saw lighter NE winds during the day, allowing for Triple-S rider interviews and media appearances to be completed, and the REAL Slider Park to be prepared for more SW winds on Tuesday. …

Monday night saw the second Kona Sunset Session Party with Camp-F playing live on the back deck right on the water from 7-11pm. Hundreds of people gathered for the sunset, food and beverages from Mojos, then danced the decking off the studs as Camp-F brought the crowd into a gyrating frenzy. The 7 parties / 5 bands concept has really caught fire as the entire Cape Hatteras community, locals, employees, business owners, and literally every tourist on the island is coming by to enjoy the kiteboarding action, live music and unbelievable views and excitement.

The Triple-S week to come…….

The 2009 Triple-S Invitational in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina continues through June 5th. The forecast is in place for good SW winds all the way thru Friday. Tuesday Triple-S action will take place in The Slick where the riders are literally dying to ride the new JWCF in butter smooth water. This is where the envelope will be pushed further than ever before in the sport of kiteboarding. The Kona Sunset Session Parties continue every night this week with Mojo Collins playing live on Wednesday night and then Dub Island Sound System on Friday Night at the Awards Party. There is another outdoor BBQ dinner on Friday starting at 5pm to kick off the Awards Ceremony, so make your plans to get here as quickly as possible to enjoy the rest of the 2009 Triple-S Invitational!!!

Video: 2009 Triple-S Wildcard Winners

The 2009 Triple-S Invitational is coming up FAST, scheduled for May 30th – June 5th in Cape Hatteras, North Carolina! The Triple-S is an “invite only” freeride event, featuring the 24 best kiteboarders in the world, including 5x World Champion Aaron Hadlow, plus Ruben Lenten, Andre Phillip, Jason Slezak, Sam Bell and more!

Part of this year’s Triple-S Invitational was the expansion of the “Wild Card” entry opportunities to 3 positions. This will allow for new talent to make it into the Triple-S Invitational each year through this competitive wild card entry process. Over 20 Wild Card entries were received, of which the Triple-S Event Committee had to make the tough decision of narrowing the field down to only 3 wild card riders to compete in the Triple-S Invitational. All of the videos featured a very high level of riding, in flatwater, on the rails, in the snow, and in the surf, from an international pool of kiteboarders spanning the globe. Just the wildcard entries themselves could be put together to form a world-class event or action DVD! The riding ability and variety was truly spectacular!

After over 4 hours of viewing all the videos, the diversified panel of 7 judges unanimously voted in Sam Medysky, Ian Alldredge, and Petter Johnsen to fill the three wildcard positions for the 2009 Triple-S Invitational. These riders, along with 21 others, will travel to Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and re-define once again what is possible for the sport of kiteboarding.

Check out the winning Wild Card Rider Videos:

Sam Medysky

Ian Alldredge

Petter Johnsen

We would like to THANK everyone who sent in wildcard videos for this year’s Triple-S Invitational! This has been a very exciting and competitive process and we encourage you to re-apply for the 2010 Triple-S when we send out next year’s invitations.
