Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA — June 9, 2012
Bringing the seventh annual Triple-S Invitational to a close, Friday night’s award ceremony concluded the prestigious week-long Surf, Slick and Slider competition.

Staged at the REAL Watersports compound, the massive waterfront backyard provided the perfect venue to watch a spectacular sunset and kick off the celebration. With the industry’s leading fleet of sliders anchored in the basin, amazing music, great vibes and the smell of grilled pig filled the air.

Attracting high-profile riders from all over the world, the invite-only kiteboarding event showcased and advanced the world’s most progressive wake- and surf-influenced kiting. With a $10,000 purse at stake, competitors rode hard throughout the week, slaying the surf and throwing down the most technical and jaw-dropping moves imaginable. The setup? An epic flatwater utopia, REAL’s industry-leading obstacle park, and Cape Hatteras’ head-high surf.

Unlike any other kiteboarding event on the planet, Triple-S’ unique format encourages competitors to take risks, trying new tricks and riding styles, and not worrying about playing it safe like at a conventional contest. With the introduction of a cash purse, a panel of judges and dual hour-long heats this year, the atmosphere and spirit on the water remained the same: in a high-energy frenzy, riders fed off each other, pushing themselves and the sport to incredible new heights.

Once the riders, media and panel of judges cast their votes in the late afternoon, the festivities commenced with an awards dinner and autograph session. Hundreds of people came out to meet the pros, see who won in each of the three disciplines, and enjoy the blow-out party, which featured music from Dub Island and The Dubplates.

Amidst a sea of spectators, the 33 Triple-S competitors took to the stage and the energy level went through the roof. As Trip Forman, Triple-S and REAL Watersports co-founder, kicked off the awards ceremony by announcing the first result, excitement and anticipation cut through the air.

On the men’s front, Brandon Scheid took four podiums, including 1st in Sliders and 2nd in Slicks. Eric Rienstra topped the podium four times as well, including Best Session and 3rd in Sliders. Billy Parker graced the podium three times, including 2nd in Sliders. And with his powerful, technical, go-bigger-than-anyone flatwater riding, Alex Pastor won the Slicks category. On the Surf side, Mark Miedama won for the second year straight.

On the women’s front, wild card winner Colleen Carroll bagged a whopping five podiums, including 1st in Sliders and 2nd in Slicks and Surf. And multiple-time World Champion Gisela Pulido scored a trio of podiums with 1st in Surf and Slicks.

2012 Triple-S Session Report #6

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA — June 8, 2012
While rideable for most of the day, Thursday’s wind was lighter than needed to run a third consecutive day of five-star action.

However, with lots of activities on tap, many competitors got at it, surfing in the Atlantic, winching in the REAL Watersports boat basin and skateboarding in the Laughing Gull Bowl. The highlight of the day, however, was the second annual Sunset Swim charity runway event.

Mojo Collins primed the stage with soulful tunes, and then the runway show kicked off at 8:30 p.m. With all proceeds benefiting Athletes 4 Cancer, the event consisted of dinner, a bikini fashion show, live auction, and raffle, as well as touching words from a cancer survivor and an inspiring glimpse of Athlete’s 4 Cancer’s survivorship program and mission.

Amidst a full house at the REAL compound, the gorgeous models strutted their stuff, showcasing swimwear from Billabong, O’Neill, Hurley, Quiksilver, Pretty in Neon, and lastly, Sensi Bikinis, which are designed by Triple-S competitor and Sunset Swim event organizer Sensi Graves. Following in the footsteps of last year’s success, the charity runway event once again raised thousands of dollars for a great cause.

One day of the world’s best Surf, Slick and Slider riding remain.

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA — June 7, 2012
Cape Hatteras’ Lighthouse and Kite Point went off again, delivering an epic setup on Wednesday for the second consecutive Triple-S Trifecta — world-class Surf, Slick and Slider riding all in one afternoon.

Like the day prior, the show kicked off at Kite Point, where the waist-deep flatwater paradise dished up a lightly-rippled canvas, perfect for the world’s best to showcase and push the forefront of the sport. Ranging from S-mobe 540s, Slim Chance 540s, Back Mobe 540s, and backside Slims to massive grabbed KGBs, crow mobes, double S-bend-to-blinds, and much more, competitors stunned the crowd who sat at water’s edge, just feet from the breath-taking action. Men and women alike demonstrated an incredible level of stylish grabbed moves, executed with precision, power, control and grace.

And as the flatwater action went off, so too did the obstacle riding. With the Naish Kicker anchored front and center, riders took turns booting into a wide range of clean, stylish and difficult spins and inverts — many of which pushed the sport to new heights.

When the two hour-long heats wrapped up, the event moved south to the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse for a round of Surf. Featuring steady wind and head-high to overhead waves, the conditions were even better than Tuesday.

“Yesterday was really good,” commented pro surfer and Triple-S competitor Josh Mulcoy. “All in all it was smooth and like a point break. You’d tack up to the jetty and then ride down from the point. It was totally like surfing, which is hard to find.”

“In the seven years of Triple-S, that was the best kite surf conditions we’ve ever had,” commented Jason Slezak, Triple-S co-creator and competitor.

Following the dual hour-long kite heats, the crew returned to the REAL Watersports compound for a black-and-white-themed dress-up party and great live tunes provided by Chucktown Throwdown. As the festivities wound down hours later, the party moved off-site, where the band setup in a nearby living room and the after-party raged well into the a.m.

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA — June 6, 2012
“Yesterday, conditions allowed the Triple-S to shine in full form,” exclaimed Jason Slezak, Triple-S co-creator and competitor. “We were able to pull off sessions in all three disciplines: Surf, Slicks, & Sliders.”

“With the northeast wind, we loaded up both the Naish and Slingshot kickers and moved the event to Kite Point,” Slezak continued, “which provided the perfect venue for spectators to watch the pros up close. Going huge off of the kickers and stomping big powered inverts in the flat water, everyone threw down for the two-hour-long Slick/Slider heats.”

Following the high-intensity action in Cape Hatteras’ endless flatwater utopia, the Triple-S contingent and its pack of onlookers moved a couple miles south to take full advantage of The Cape’s exposure to the Atlantic Ocean. From 5 to 7 p.m., the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse provided the stage for Triple-S’ Surf discipline.

“There were huge smiles on all the riders faces as they hit the water to shred the waist-to-shoulder-high lefts in the warm green waters of the Atlantic,” commented Slezak. “After completing two hour long heats, many of the riders, in true Triple-S fashion, rode all the way to dark through a beautiful Cape Hatteras sunset.”

And as the sun went down, the nightlife began with an 80’s-themed party at the REAL Watersports compound, where DTS & the Moneybags took the stage.

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA — June 5, 2012
Monday morning, day three of the Triple-S started off on a heart-wrenching, horrendous note. Following the slider park action in The Slick on Sunday, organizers corralled the five world-class obstacles together and anchored them in The Slick. During the night, however, an unidentified party unleashed havoc by releasing the anchors, setting everything adrift.

Fortunately, the onshore winds pushed the sliders towards shore, rather than over the horizon into oblivion. Oddly, the culprits kindly tied everything together once it drifted to shore. One of the kickers, however, was dragged off and found overturned in a poor thievery attempt.

Several PWCs of competitors mobbed up to The Slick to pry the beached 80-foot-long John Wayne A-frame from the marsh. And in the end, all was recovered with no lasting damage — except the disappearance of the sliders’ anchors. Combing the waist-deep water in an arms-locked-searching-for-a-body fashion, most of the lost anchors were found.

By the time order returned, the wind had dropped off, rendering the prospect of a Slick or Slider competition unlikely. Nevertheless, the day unfolded in the high-energy spirit of the Triple-S.

“Yesterday was as true of a representation of the founding concepts of the event as you could ever have,” commented Trip Forman, REAL Watersports co-founder and Triple-S co-founder. “The first Triple-S was organized around getting like-minded riders together for a week to help push the sport forward. Even with the lack of wind on Monday, the riders setup the REAL Slider Park in the sound and inside the basin and continued to push each other’s abilities forward. Even though it was a complete lay day, the vibe was still there and the riding level continued to progress even further.”

Riding until sunset, competitors took turns winching the 100-yard-long boat basin, which was setup with the Best Rooftop Rail, followed by the Liquid Force Reverse Rainbow Rail. And out on the Sound, dual PWCs towed riders across the John Wayne A-frame.

That evening the Dub Island Sound System rocked the crowd at REAL and an all-time afterhours party followed off site.

Four days of the world’s best Surf, Slick and Slider riding remain.

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA — June 4, 2012
Kicking off the Triple-S Invitational competition on Sunday, riders hit the water in the late afternoon yesterday as the wind came up.

During the 11 a.m. rider’s meeting at REAL Watersports’ four-acre waterfront compound, competitors drew placement in one of two heats. The three disciplines — Surf, Slicks and Sliders — will all feature alternating hour-long heats between the Black and White Heats throughout the week.

The Black Heat includes 16 riders: Billy Parker, Brandon Scheid, Brian Smith, Eric Rienstra, Evan Netsch, James Boulding, Joby Cook, Joe Ruscito, Josh Mulcoy, Niccolo Porcella, Rich Sabo, Sam Bell and Sam Medysky — plus female riders Kris Kinn, Paula Rosales, and Susi Mai.

The White Heat includes 17 riders: Alex Pastor, Teddy Lyons, Andre Phillip, Chris Burke, Craig Cunningham, Davey Blair, Jake Kelsick, Jason Slezak, Mark Miedama, Rick Jensen, Sam Light and Tom Court — plus female riders Colleen Carroll, Claire Lutz, Gisela Pulido, Lulu Vroman, and Sensi Graves.

Following the heat draw and a relaxing morning at REAL, where The Wilders played a live set, riders pumped up and organizers towed the five-piece, start-of-the-art slider park out into The Slick.

Between 4 and 7 p.m., competitors christened the freshly made obstacles in a frenzy of next-level, rail-riding madness, while spectators gathered at the end of the pier to watch up close. Faced with challenging up-and-down wind conditions, riders rose to the occasion, laying down some serious and stylish moves until the wind totally fizzled out. Rail hits ranged from backside boardslides to the super technical, involving 270’s on, locked-in low-stanced presses, rewinds, 270’s off, a high degree of individual style and a lot more.

Five days of the world’s best Surf, Slick and Slider riding remain.

Cape Hatteras, North Carolina, USA — June 3, 2012
Last night marked the official kickoff of the world’s most exclusive and prestigious invite-only kiteboarding event — the Triple-S Invitational. Running from June 2 to 8, this seventh annual event will showcase the planet’s most progressive surf- and wake-influenced action on three fronts: Surf, Slicks and Sliders.

Top freeride kiteboarders and kite surfers poured in from nine different countries yesterday for seven days of riding, parties and music at North America’s most notorious kiting destination. Riders and spectators congregated at the REAL Watersports compound, the Triple-S epicenter. Amidst super-light winds in the afternoon, competitors warmed up behind PWCs, practicing their rail-riding skills on two of the event’s world-class obstacles: the 80-foot-long John Wayne A-frame (which can convert to an M-gap) and the freshly-built Best rooftop rail.

As the sun went down, hundreds of people gathered for the Red Bull Kickoff Party at REAL, which featured an autograph-signing session, an opening ceremony, good drinks, stellar music (provided by DJ Chela) and an incredible vibe.

Twenty-six men and eight women will compete for the trio of Triple-S crowns, and the event’s first-ever monetary purse, totaling $10,000. Also new this year is the slightly modified format, which will split the pack into two to reduce crowding on the water. Depending on the day’s conditions, the group will take hour-long turns slaying obstacles, throwing flatwater tricks or riding sick surf.

At week’s end, the riders and media will vote for the winners. New for this year, however, organizers added a third layer of judging: a mysterious three-person panel comprised of some of the sport’s foremost experts.

Following Hurricane Irene last fall, which completely destroyed REAL’s state-of-the-art, world-class slider park, the features were rebuilt better than ever. The new fleet of obstacles features the Slingshot Kicker, Naish Kicker, Best Rooftop, Liquid Force Reverse Rainbow and the restored John Wayne A-frame.

The men’s invited lineup includes: Andre Phillip, Billy Parker, Brandon Scheid, Brian Smith, Chris Burke, Davey Blair, Eric Rienstra, Evan Netsch, Jake Kelsick, James Boulding, Jason Slezak, Joby Cook, Joe Ruscito, Josh Mulcoy, Mark Miedama, Niccolo Porcella, Rick Jensen, Sam Bell, Sam Light, Sam Medysky, and Tom Court. Plus two wildcards who won invites via video submissions: two-time vice world champion Alex Pastor from Spain, and California-based wave-slayer Bear Karry. Alternates Craig Cunningham, Rich Sabo, and Teddy Lyons made the cut as well.

On the women’s side, the invited lineup includes: nine-time world champion Gisela Pulido, Kris Kinn, Lulu Vroman, and Susi Mai, plus wildcard winner Colleen Carroll, and alternates Claire Lutz, Paula Rosales, and Sensi Graves.

The 2012 Triple-S Invitational is supported by REAL Watersports, John Wayne Cancer Foundation, Outer Beaches Realty, Stance, SBC, Liquid Force, Slingshot, Best Kiteboarding, BWS, Naish, Dakine, Arnette, Skullcandy, Rebootizer, Red Bull, Soloshot, Outer Banks Visitors Bureau, Watermen’s Retreat, MOJOs Sunset Cafe.
